Chapter 17

Orion

Veronica took a seat at that table, and the tension crackled through the air like electricity. We had split up to observe, but we all felt it as intensely as if we were sitting beside her. She must have sensed something too, because the first thing she did was look back and forth between the solemn faces of her friends.

The other girl, whom I assumed was the one known as Lian, acknowledged her with a quick, false smile. Her lips moved. I had to focus to hear her through the glass and the din of the other patrons.

“Hi, V. How are you feeling?” She spoke very deliberately, choosing each word with the utmost care. I got the strong impression that before Veronica arrived, Lian had been navigating a precarious social minefield alone.

“Uh…fine.” Again, Veronica looked around. “What’s up with you guys? Are we going to a funeral after this?” She reached over and touched Dylan’s arm. “How crazy is this, that we’re all sitting at a table together somehow?”

He chuckled and shook his head. One of his hands found hers and squeezed it. “I gotta say, it’s not something I ever imagined. I wished for it, when…” He trailed off, then cleared his throat. “Well, you know. And I can’t believe my wish came true.”

I turned my attention to Trent in an attempt to gauge his reaction. He sat back in his chair, saying nothing. His gaze traveled between every other person at the table. I could feel him thinking, mulling things over. The urge to jump in through the plate glass and ask him what he saw was nearly overwhelming.

As I watched the scene unfold, my hand curled into a loose fist. There was so much context I was plainly missing, cues I longed to understand. Was Dylan acting strangely? Had he said anything to arouse suspicion so far? What I really wanted to know was whether or not we’d be justified in leaping in and tearing him to shreds. Every inch of me itched to do just that.

If only such an intervention were possible! Nothing would have pleased me more, and it was a scenario at least Seth would also find agreeable. But Veronica had shown herself to be a naïve little fool in Dylan’s presence; no doubt she’d be traumatized and start to despise me all over again. I couldn’t bear the thought of losing her to the whim of mortal emotion, which meant I had no choice but to bite my tongue and bide my time.

“I’m sorry if I keep staring,” Lian was saying. “I just can’t wrap my head all the way around this yet. Where were you? How did you escape?” She paused. “How are you…alive?”

Even from a spectator’s viewpoint, it was obvious that her questions made Veronica nervous. I watched my girl fidget subtly in her chair—touching her hair, turning the rings on her fingers, bouncing her knee gently underneath the tabletop. Was she anxious because she anticipated his answers and didn’t want Lian to hear them?

Or maybe she feared what Dylan might say.
